Gary Kirkland, columnist for our local newspaper, the Gainesville Sun, has written a great column describing 25 North Florida Outdoor Escapes. In his words, "If you are new to Gainesville, or even if you've been around a while but haven't ventured out into the wilds beyond your driveway, it's time to lace up your hiking boots, pump up the bike tires, or rent a canoe and do a little exploring." This is a great listing of outdoor recreation opportunities in and around Gainesville (none more than a 2-hour drive away), complete with hotlinks for more information.
By the way, last but not least on Gary Kirkland's list is "The University of Florida's best kept secret", Lake Wauburg. Lake Wauburg North and South are Outdoor Recreation park facilities owned and operated by the University of Florida. The lake side parks offer quiet places to relax, have fun with your friends and meet new ones. Students, faculty and staff have free admission to your own private parks with your Gator 1 Card. The North Park is located eight short miles from campus on Highway 441 near Paynes Prairie.
And, of course, right here on campus, we have the University Gardens, Lake Alice, the Baughman Center, and the Bat House on Museum Road. And near N.W. 34th St. and Hull Road are the Southwest Recreation Facilities, Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Harn Art Museum, and Florida Museum of Natural History (Powell Hall).
Sports fans, check out the official website of the Florida Gators sponsored by the University Athletic Association, for the latest in news, current events, and sports schedules for UF collegiate athletic events.
