RE: Web Design Skills for Graduate Students: Three Summer Courses

During Summer A/C 2012, the UF College of Journalism and Communications is offering three exciting distance courses in web skills useful for all graduate students, even if they are not majors in that college:

MMC 6939 Digital Imagery in Web Design (4 credits) T, R 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This course will familiarize students with the development and impact of imagery in interactive media. Students will learn how visual 'language' is the basis for developing contextual symbolic meanings that are shared throughout a culture. Semiotics, information design and persuasive communication will be explored in this course. Students will develop communicative images using their knowledge gained through lectures, discussions and Photoshop training.

MMC 6939 Corporate and Brand Identity on the Web (3 credits)

This course synthesizes two different but complementary tools of communication: graphic design and assembly (both print and electronic). You will learn the fundamental design principles and techniques for effective visual communication. These principles and techniques are applied, through projects, to achieve a communication objective across different platforms. Students can expect a practical, hands-on experience. A key tool for creating your digital work in this course is Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is an effective tool for creating original artwork, designing logos, banners, icons and navigational elements for online and print. The artwork can then easily be exported to the Web or imported into other programs.

VIC 5326 Digital Media Layout and Design (3 credits)

There is little doubt that the effectiveness of a mediated message is, in part, determined by its design and execution. For this reason, layout principles are as important in digital media as they are in the world of print. This course introduces you to the skills and concepts that will help you create documents for both print and interactivity. Using Adobe InDesign, you will apply your understanding of color, type, layout, and design to create a portfolio project. While InDesign permits several possible workflows, this course will focus on those that most readily translate into digital design.

Enrollment is limited to 10 students per course. While the courses are taught at a distance, students can interact with their professors and classmates in our live delivery system. For a demonstration, click on this link:

<a href="http://www.distance.ufl.edu/wdoc" target="_blank">http://www.distance.ufl.edu/wdoc</a>

This exciting opportunity is available for a limited time. Please contact Professor Michael Weigold at <a href="mailto:mweigold@jou.ufl.edu">mweigold@jou.ufl.edu</a> for registration.</pre>

TO:	Members of the Graduate Faculty

FROM:	Henry T. Frierson, Associate Vice President and Dean of the Graduate School

RE:	Election of Representatives to the Graduate Council for 2012-2015 term

We are pleased to provide a slate of candidates who have agreed to serve if elected to the Graduate Council.

The Graduate Council is the policy-recommending body for the Graduate Faculty and the Graduate School. It has an important role in determining the direction of graduate education and programs at the University of Florida. There are 13 graduate faculty on the Council.  Twelve members (6 elected by the Graduate Faculty and 6 appointed by the Provost) serve three-year terms, with four members (2 elected and 2 appointed) retiring each year. A representative from the Graduate Coordinators Advisory Council serves for a one-year term.  Additionally, a member from the Graduate Student Council serves for a one-year term.

Please vote for two members who will serve for the 2012-2015 academic years. After the election, the Provost's two appointments typically will come from areas lacking representation.

All Graduate Faculty holding a regular appointment in his/her primary department are eligible to vote.

Voting will be conducted MARCH 23, 2012 - APRIL 13, 2012.

You will need your GatorLink ID and GatorLink password to access the electronic ballot, which is in the GIMS system.

You must use Internet Explorer as the browser.

Here is the link to start the process:
<a href="http://gradschool.ufl.edu/gimsportal/gatorlink/portal.asp" target="_blank">http://gradschool.ufl.edu/gimsportal/gatorlink/portal.asp</a>

1.            Log into GIMS using Gatorlink authentication
2.            Scroll to bottom of the screen to "Graduate Council Voting"; click Select
3.            You will now see sections: Current Graduate Council Members; Biosketches for the Candidates; and the Graduate Council Election Ballot
4.            Select up to 2 candidates; click Vote
5.            Confirm your vote

Thank you for participating in this election as a member of the graduate faculty.
