College of Medicine Guidelines

Eligibility and Nominations:
Each department in the College of Medicine is eligible to nominate up to 3 students. Undergraduate students must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. The departments will be expected to rank the student projects that are nominated for the award prior to submission to the College for final selection. For the 1999-2000 competition, the students will conduct research during the summer of 1999 and continue their work during the 1999-2000 academic year by taking research-oriented courses in the College for credit. The research project may be completed in one of the College of Medicine courses listed below:

BMS 4905 Medical Science Senior Research Var credit.
BCH 4905 Biochemistry Senior research Var credit.

The College of Medicine will accept nominations up to but not later than March 15, 1999. Nominations should include:

Nominations should be submitted to Brooke Smith in the College of Medicine Office of Graduate Education (M-128).

Selection Process:
A maximum of 18 Undergraduate University Scholars will be will be chosen by a College of Medicine Selection Committee. Students will be notified of their selection by March 29, 1999, along with the faculty mentors and department chairs.

Presentation and Publication of Research Projects:
Selected Undergraduate Research Scholars will present their research results at a special University Scholars Symposium, as oral presentations. This Symposium will be held on April 1, 2000 at the University of Florida Hotel and Conference Center. Details of this symposium will be communicated at a later date.

Undergraduate Research Scholars within the College of Medicine will also be expected to publish their work at a minimum in the university's on-line journal Undergraduate Research and, if worthy, in any other established scientific journal related to their line of research.

Reception for Students and Faculty
Following the Symposium, an award luncheon will be held for the University Scholars, their parents, chairs, and faculty mentors. Students and faculty mentors will be recognized at that time.
