University Scholars Program Guidelines

Eligibility and Nominations:
Each department in the College of Medicine is eligible to nominate up to 6 students. Undergraduate students must have maintained an overall GPA of 3.0 or better. The departments will be expected to rank the student projects that are nominated for the award prior to submission to the College for final selection. For the 2000-2001 competition, the students will conduct research during the summer of 2000 and continue their work during the 2000-2001 academic year. The awardess will also conduct supervised study under their mentors during the academic year, registering for credit in one of the courses listed below:

BMS 4905 Medical Science Senior Research, Variable credit.
BCH 4905 Biochemistry Senior Research, Variable credit.
MCB 4905 Microbiology Senior Research, Variable credit.

Students should normally register for 3 hours per semester in one of these research courses.

The College of Medicine will accept nominations up to but not later than March 1, 2000. Nominations should be submitted to Dr. Colin Sumners, Associate Dean for Graduate Education, in the College of Medicine Office of Graduate Education, Academic Research Building, room R1-102.

Selection Process:
Thirty Four Undergraduate University Scholars will be will be chosen by a College of Medicine Selection Committee.

Presentation and Publication of Research Projects:
Selected Undergraduate Research Scholars will present their research results at a special University Scholars Symposium, as oral presentations. This Symposium will be held in the Spring. Details of this symposium will be communicated at a later date.

Undergraduate Research Scholars within the College of Medicine will also be expected to publish their work at a minimum in the university's on-line journal Undergraduate Research and, if worthy, in any other established scientific journal related to their line of research.

Reception for Students and Faculty
Following the Symposium, an award luncheon will be held for the University Scholars, their parents, chairs, and faculty mentors. Students and faculty mentors will be recognized at that time.
