IDP Seminar Course
(GMS 6901)

GMS 6901 is an S/U course. The requirements you must achieve for a
"Satisfactory" grade in the course are listed below. Attendance
must be recorded by signing the attendance sheet. Please note that there
are two types of seminars in the schedule: research seminars and career
development seminars.
- Attend the introductory session (required): "Writing Structured
Abstracts" by Dr. Semple-Rowland on September 7.
- Attend 75% of the other scheduled seminars for the semester, e.g. 9
of 12. These may be any seminars of your choice, including research
and/or career development seminars.
- Write a structured abstract of 250-350 words summarizing three (3) research
seminars of your choice.
Check yourself for plagiarism by submitting your abstract to Turnitin.
Submit your abstracts via WebCT
Vista no later than 5:00 pm the following Monday.
Feedback on your
writing will be provided by faculty members and/or advanced IDP
students.
- At the end of each of your three structured abstracts, add one paragraph
labelled "Critique", with a 100-200 word critique of the seminar
presentation, e.g. speaking style, organization of the talk,
Powerpoint presentation, strengths/weaknesses, etc.

16. These may be any seminars of your choice, including research
and/or career development seminars.

Student Luncheons
A graduate
student luncheon will be held for each seminar speaker and up to 8 graduate
students at 12:00 noon. You must be signed up in advance with the seminar speaker's host or Ms.
Kathleen Conture to attend the luncheon. Be sure to take advantage of
this opportunity to meet speakers who address topics you are particularly
interested in.
